Grades: O'Neill National Theater Institute

 

  • Students who study with any of Messiah's approved off campus study programs will receive letter grades for their academic courses.

  • The same pass/fail policy applies for students who are studying off campus as for those who are studying in Grantham (see policy outlined below).

  • The following policy is used to assign grades for coursework completed at the O’Neill National Theater Institute:


NATIONAL THEATER INSTITUTE GRADING POLICY

The key areas for evaluation are:  how much effort you put into the work, how you work to expand your own potential, and how you challenge yourself with each task or opportunity.  Your attitude toward the work, preparation, attendance, punctuality, and contributions to the ensemble are also vital areas. These are the foundation elements of professionalism, and they form a major component of your final grades.  Above and beyond this, the quality of your work itself is of paramount consideration.

 

 

General Guideline:

 

A(-) Reserved for accomplishment that is distinctive and demonstrably outstanding. This is NOT handed out automatically, and is, in fact, a rarity.
B(+)(-)  Given for work above acceptable standards.  Student demonstrates originality and creativity. Often demonstrates initiative.
C(+)(-) Average grade for a student who gives the work a reasonable amount of time and effort.
D(+)(-) Student shows limited understanding of subject. Work falls below acceptable standard of class.  Little evidence of effort or creativity.  Attendance is very weak, but assignments are completed.

Work is unsatisfactory, fails to prepare for class and does not complete assignments.

Chronic tardiness and/or absences will result in a drop in grade level.

Pass/Fail Option
During their college careers, Messiah College students may take a maximum of four courses on a pass/fail (P/F) basis with these conditions:

  • Such a course must be from a discipline other than those required for the student's major or minor.
  • Courses fulfilling requirements for a major, minor, or general education may not be used.
  • Students may declare their intention to take a course under the Pass/Fail option when they register or through the first calendar week of classes at the beginning of the new term. Students may also select to return to the letter grade system during this same time period. The selection cannot be changed after the first calendar week of classes.
  • The cut-off point to obtain a P is C–.
  • The instructor will submit only conventional letter grades to the Registrar's Office. This office will then convert the grade to P or F. (An instructor does not know which students are taking a course on a pass/fail basis.
