London Internship Program

Live and work in Europe’s third largest city!  Learn to navigate the streets that contain St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace.  Integrate the important ritual of afternoon tea into your daily schedule.  Explore possible career paths through an internship experience supplemented with academic study.  Students gain valuable international work experience in a wide variety of organizations and companies.  Since Arcadia University sponsors the program, students take classes taught by Arcadia faculty (students may choose to take classes at other local universities, as noted on Arcadia's website, for additional fees between $2,000 and $3,500).  Discover British culture through this exciting opportunity! Internships are offered in a variety of areas, including “arts, charitable organizations, media and broadcasting companies, healthcare establishments, government offices, and large corporate enterprises.”

Goals and Objectives
The London Internship Program provides a well-rounded, cross-cultural learning experience by working, living, and studying in another culture. Students will come to a fundamental understanding and appreciation for British culture while gaining career-related, international work experience.

Requirements
Students must have junior or senior status and have a 3.0 GPA or higher to apply. The completion of three courses in an academic area that relates to the internship are required before participating in the program. Students are required to attend all Messiah-run pre-departure orientation sessions the semester before studying abroad as well as half-day reentry retreat upon returning to campus the following semester.

Credits
The academic courses may meet major or general education requirements and will receive a letter grade. Courses taken will appear on Messiah transcripts with letter grades. Please refer to grade conversion chart.

Students will meet their third language/cross-cultural requirement by participating in this program.  Students will not earn 3 credits, rather the requirement will be waived.

Costs 2013 - 2014  $18,385*, plus deposit

Fee covers tuition, housing, **round-trip international airfare, educational excursions, pre-departure, and re-entry orientation.  Meals are not included.  Note: additional fees students may encounter include (but are not limited to) local transportation, visas, passports, immunizations, and course fees.  A $500 deposit is typically requested within two weeks of acceptance.

For comparison, a typical semester in Grantham for 2013-2014 is $19,655.

Note: * Additional fees will be assessed for non-arcadia courses. Fees may also apply for Arcadia courses in computing, engineering, and music.

**Once flights are booked, students are responsible for the cost of the flight if they cannot participate for any reason, including visa issues.  Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the jumping off point in the United States.

Application Deadlines
Please complete both the online and paper version of the applications. Before mailing the paper version; students should submit a copy to the Intercultural Office.

Fall Semester: April 1
Spring Semester: September 15

Students are encourage to apply early (a year in advance is not too soon). Internships in business, finance, healthcare, television, and radio require more time to secure than others.

Apply Apply Checklist

“One of the most rewarding experiences I have taken from my time abroad was the opportunity to intern with an MP of the British Parliament. Although taking classes in London allowed me to gain a greater understanding of the educational process, the ability to work in London provided me with the opportunity to receive information and experience first-hand regarding the British government and political process.”

--Elizabeth Poulin
