Adventure! Academics! Australia!


This semester-long program, sponsored by the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, allows students to explore Australian culture while living with Australian families and taking classes alongside Australian students at Christian Heritage College in Brisbane. “Brisbane is not only a beautiful river city filled with ferries and bridges and sky-scrapers and quirky art installations, but it’s foot-friendly and built for adventure and outdoor experiences. Brisbane is also (close to) . . .  the Great Barrier Reef, Frazier Island, the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast, and Surfer’s Paradise, the Scenic Rim and Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo.” - BestSemester  


Christian Heritage College offers courses in:

BUSINESS: Accounting, Marketing, Management, HR Management.

DRAMA: Australian Drama, Drama History, Costume Design, Sound and Lighting, Expression.

EDUCATION: Early, Primary, Middle and Secondary.

ENGLISH: Christian Writers, Australian Literature, European and American Literature, Creative Writing.

HISTORY: Australian History, World History, China and Japan, European History.

SOCIAL SCIENCES: Counseling, Youth Work, Human Services, Chaplaincy, Community Development, Human Behaviour, Biblical Studies.

MINISTRIES: Ministry Foundation, Ministry Formation, Practical Ministry, Ministry Leadership, Social Justice.

Students should have completed two full years of college and have at least a 2.75 GPA to qualify for the program. Will consider sophomores. Students are required to attend all Messiah-run pre-departure orientation sessions the semester before studying abroad as well as half-day reentry retreat upon returning to campus the following semester.

The 15 or 16 credits earned may meet general education or major requirements Courses taken will appear on Messiah transcripts with letter grades. Please refer to the grade conversion chart. Students will take courses in Australian and Indigenous History as well as choose from a variety of courses from Integrative Studies, School of Theology, School of Music, School of Dance, Improvisation, School of Drama and School of Design.


Students will meet their third language/cross-cultural requirement by participating in this program. Students will not earn 3 credits, rather the requirement will be waived.

Costs 2014-2015 

Because of the high cost of this program, participation is capped at 9 students per academic year.

Messiah tuition, room, board, plus $1,700 off-campus study fee.

Fee covers tuition, housing, meals, educational excursions, pre-departure, and re-entry orientation. Note: additional fees students may encounter include (but are not limited to) local transportation, visas, passports, immunizations, and course fees. 


Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from this program.
