Hokusei Gakuen University
BCA Study Abroad
Note: BCA will be discontinuing this program after the fall 2013 semester.
Fly to the other side of the world and spend a semester in Japan! In Sapporo, the capital city of the northern island of Hokkaido, students take classes through Hokusei Gakuen University. Students will experience Japanese language and culture while studying in Sapporo–Japan’s third largest city. Students are placed in language classes–based on their abilities–from beginning through advanced levels and take classes from the BCA Study Abroad director and at the university. Students interact with their Japanese peers through classes and student clubs, and experience Japanese culture by living with a local host family. The program includes trips to Hiroshima, the Honshu region of Japan, Moiwa Mountain, the hot springs of Shikotsu-Toya Park, and notable sites within Sapporo. Sapporo hosts its famous Snow Festival every February, and lies near several ski slopes and national parks.
BCA Study Abroad offers students, who are seriously interested in enriching their college experiences, an opportunity to enhance their curriculum with a semester or year of study abroad. Programs in China, England, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Mexico, and Spain give students a wide range of options.
Goals and Objectives
BCA Study Abroad attempts to integrate American students into an overseas university, allowing them to broaden their horizons, to experience different cultures, and to practice speaking another modern language.
Students must have completed two full years of college and must have a 2.7 GPA or higher to qualify. Students are required to attend all Messiah-run pre-departure orientation sessions the semester before studying abroad as well as half-day reentry retreat upon returning to campus the following semester.
Students will meet their third language/cross-cultural requirement by participating in this program. Students will not earn 3 credits, rather the requirement will be waived.
Credits / Grades
The 15 or 16 credits students earn each semester may meet some general education or major requirements. Courses taken will appear on Messiah transcripts with letter grades. Please refer to the grade conversion chart.

“The experience in Japan has not only enhanced my education, I feel it has transformed it. On site in Japan I was able to put into daily practice what I was learning and that encouraged me to work harder and study more.”
