MA in Higher Education: Graduate Assistantships
The Higher Education program at Messiah College is pleased to announce the availability of six graduate assistantships for academic year 2013-14. Graduate assistantships offer students the opportunity to put the theories, gained through classroom instruction, into practice through supervised, real-world experience. Assistantships are designed to provide a meaningful educational and professional experience that will provide graduates with the skills and knowledge they need for successful professional employment. The following Graduate Assistantships are available at Messiah College's Grantham campus beginning 2013-14 and will continue through the 2014-15 academic year.
Agapé Center for Service and Learning
Agapé Center for Service and Learning Graduate Assistant - Position FILLED
($10,000.00 Annual Stipend, from Aug 5 – June 15; 20 hours a week not to exceed 800 hours/year)
The Service-Learning Graduate Assistant provides administrative, training, and assessment support to the Director of the Agapé Center related to the implementation of the College’s service-learning curricular and co-curricular program. This includes coordinating the international service-learning spring break and summer Agapé Center experiences. Graduate Assistants assist the Director with announcements, publicity, and recruitment for programs; assist students in identifying placement opportunities; coordinate schedules and booking of service-learning experiences; liaison with Development office to coordinate fundraising programs and budget reports; assist the Director in facilitation of courses; welcome interested students and educators; office duties. Experience and skills needed: excellent organizational, time management and independent thinking skills; small group and interpersonal facilitation skills; proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Banner and Contribute software; ability to cooperate and partner well with others. Occasional weekend and evening work as priorities demand. Christian faith commitment, valid PA driver’s license, and prior involvement and/or facilitation with short-term international service teams required.
Multicultural Student Programs - Still Accepting Applications
($10,000.00 Annual Stipend, from Aug 5 – June 5; 20 hours a week not to exceed 800 hours/year)
Assists the Director of Multicultural Programs in creating, implementing, and sustaining educational programs, including but not limited to Martin Scholars and Amigo Mentoring Program. Graduate Assistants will help organize, inform, mentor and keep track of students in the programs; organize and promote events; lead all fostering scholarship sessions; help create and report evaluations of heritage months. Experience and skills needed: Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Intercultural Office - Multicultural Programs; desire to work with students; understanding of issues and concerns of students from domestic underrepresented racial/ethnic and international groups; strong interpersonal and verbal and written communications skills; strong organizational skills, including time management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities; ability to work independently; demonstrate initiative; ability to maintain strict confidentiality; proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Banner and Contribute software; ability to cooperate and partner well with others. Occasional weekend and evening work as priorities demand. Christian faith commitment required.
Student Retention Graduate Assistant - Position FILLED
($10,000.00 Annual Stipend, from Aug 5 – June 5; 20 hours a week not to exceed 800 hours/year)
Under the supervision of the Registrar/Coordinator of Student Retention, the Graduate Assistant will perform duties related to the College’s retention plan and serve as an active member of the Student Retention Team. The Graduate Assistant will assist students in developing an educational plan and strategy to improve their success; meet with students who are considered at risk; participate in student orientation; refer students to internal support service programs; assist with development and presentation of workshops for students; provide data summaries. Experience and skills needed: excellent organizational, time management and independent thinking skills; knowledge of study techniques; commitment to student success; ability to cooperate and partner well with others. Occasional weekend and evening work as priorities demand. Christian faith commitment required.
Athletic Department
Men’s Basketball Graduate Assistant Coach - Position FILLED
($8,000.00 Annual Stipend, from Aug 5 – June 5; 20 hours a week not to exceed 800 hours/year)
Assists the basketball head coach in operating an intercollegiate athletics program that pursues our complementary goals of athletic excellence and Christian character. The Graduate Assistant will assist in all facets of the basketball program, including the recruitment of excellent student-athletes, organization and planning of practices, game preparation, administrative duties, scouting, and monitoring academic progress of student-athletes. Experience and skills needed: ability to coach, teach, and train student-athletes in skills and strategies specific to basketball to make them as competitive as possible; ability to establish appropriate and effective mentoring relationships; ability to cooperate and partner well with others. Will demonstrate a commitment to continued learning/professional development via presentations, workshops, and/or conferences. Occasional weekend and evening work as the schedule demands. Christian faith commitment and college level playing experience required.
Softball Graduate Assistant Coach - Position FILLED
($8,000.00 Annual Stipend, from Aug 5 – June 5; 20 hours a week not to exceed 800 hours/year)

Compensation and Eligibility
Graduate Assistants earn compensation as salaried, non-exempt employees for the performance of administrative services that benefit the College and also serve as part of the student’s academic and professional development. The service performed must be related to the student’s academic program in order to qualify for an assistantship appointment. Students may not count the same work experience in their graduate assistantships for internship experience. The graduate assistantship and internship(s) must be distinct experiences. The graduate assistant must be eligible to work in the United States; eligibility is confirmed via the I-9 Form. Graduate Assistants must maintain full-time registered, degree-seeking status (6 credits per semester, 15 per calendar year) and good academic standing (3.0 GPA) for the duration of the Graduate Assistant appointment. Graduate Assistants work approximately 20 hours per week during their appointment and no more than 800 hours per calendar year. Graduate Assistants may not be employed on campus in any other capacity during the period of the graduate assistantship. Graduate Assistants will be evaluated by their supervisors in Dec and May.

- Please note that one or more references must have the ability to specifically address your skills and abilities in regards to the assistantship context.
Placements
- Graduate assistantships will be awarded based on a thorough review of applicants, including interviews. Candidates’ interests and skills will be matched with available two-year assistantships. The HIED Advisory Council will review completed assistantship applications on a rolling basis. Placements will be made in partnership with assistantship supervisors.
- Applications will be accepted until positions are filled.
- Graduate Assistant placement is contingent upon completion of successful reference and background checks.
