In addition to the first-year seminar, Honors Program participants take two interdisciplinary honors courses that meet general education requirements. Each semester offers a diverse range of course topics, such as
Art in the Ancient Americas — a non-western studies art history course exploring the archeological remains of ancient, indigenous peoples, or
Genetics and Society — an introduction to the evolving field of genetics, giving consideration to the potential impact of such research on society. Through a combination of rigorous academics and spiritually challenging course content, students are encouraged to develop their intellect and Christian worldview.
Students continue to participate in Honors Congresses as sophomores and juniors, completing three semesters’ worth before graduation. These Congresses, like the interdisciplinary courses, explore various topics designed to appeal to a range of students. As well as attending lectures, Congresses have viewed and critically discussed classic films and engaged in intellectually stimulating events, on and off campus.
Additionally, participants receive opportunities to meet with special guests to the Messiah College campus, as well as members of the College’s administration, in small group honors discourses. Often involving a dinner in the private dining room or more casual conversation with pizza, students are able to engage in discussions that stretch their knowledge and perspective. Discourses frequently take students off campus, as well, to the Harrisburg Symphony or a Hershey Bears hockey game.
