For Parents of International Students & U.S. Citizens Abroad
Greetings from the International Admissions Office! We are excited to be working with you and your student throughout the application process. We realize that many international parents play an active role in the lives of their students as they apply and transition to college. We recognize that it can feel like a daunting process when we are separated by borders and oceans.
Our office has a number of resources in place to engage you in the process and help you assist your student.
During the Admissions Process:
It is our policy to work primarily with the applicant (i.e., your child) as we believe this is an important step in gaining independence and taking on the personal responsibility that higher education in the U.S.A. demands. We also recognize that students may need help from their parents. Feel free to contact us by email or phone with your questions. We also encourage you to connect with the EducationUSA Office closest to your home.
EducationUSA centers are the U.S. State Department‘s network of over 400 advising centers in 170 countries designed to assist local students find the appropriate college or university in the United States. We encourage you to visit your local center for information on selecting the U.S. college or university that meets your needs, understanding and preparing for the required admissions tests, assistance in the admission process, advice on finding financial aid for your student’s studies, preparation for the student visa process, and pre-departure orientations. Click this link to find your nearest center.
Make sure that you ask your student to give you access to MCSquare for Parents, Messiah’s parent portal, which disseminates important information on everything from health services to housing, and course registration to finances.
Decision to Enroll:
Once your student chooses to enroll at Messiah, you will become a “Messiah Parent” and a part of this great extended community.
Orientation at Messiah:
For parents able to accompany their child to Messiah College to start their first year here, an International Parent Orientation is conducted by the International Admissions Office during the time your student is in the International Student Orientation conducted by the International Student Programs Office. You will be able to meet the many offices and individuals on campus who are committed to our international students and will help them thrive during their time here.
Our own President Kim S. Phipps is the parent of a college student and offers some helpful advice for parents in an op-ed in our local newspaper.
Thank you for the opportunity to work with your child!
