Academics and Majors

Although faith is rooted in believing and intellect is rooted in questioning, at Messiah, we see no difficulty in bringing the two into harmony. We invite you to inhabit the entire landscape, to embrace both Christian faith and academic inquiry, and to allow the one to enhance the other. Within the landscape of your life, both your faith and your intellect have very important roles to play.

Our Faculty

Your Messiah professors — educated in top universities, involved in ground-breaking scholarly and artistic work — are thoroughly committed Christians. They challenge and mentor you through the many perspectives of the academic world, while inviting you to set those insights into conversation with your Christian faith. They are uniquely equipped to cultivate your intellect while deepening your spiritual insight.

Your professors help you build strong connections between your spiritual walk and your developing intellect.

We teach students to think critically. The process is demanding. Students
grapple with challenging subjects, unfamiliar perspectives, and tough
questions. In the end, not only have they developed a mature intellect, but
their faith has grown stronger and more thoughtful.   –professor

Academic Majors

With over 55 exciting majors and pre-professional programs at Messiah, you’ll get to study just about any subject you like– whether it’s one you already know you enjoy or some new subject you’ve always wanted to learn more about.

You’ll be challenged to stretch your mind and expand your worldview, but also apply your Christian values in concrete ways as you learn, explore, and grow intellectually, spiritually, and personally.

Whatever your interest, whatever the class, your Messiah professors will serve as role models for you — showing you how to integrate a life of faith with your intellectual pursuits.

Academic opportunities include:

Four Academic Schools

Messiah College has four different academic schools, each with its own dean, faculty, academic program, and facility. Each major falls within one of the four academic schools. The schools create smaller, more focused learning communities, making the academic experience at Messiah even more rich and rewarding for you.

We are a relatively small (under 3,000 students), residential college, so it’s fairly easy to make friends and become part of the whole Messiah College community. But the major you choose will also automatically make you a member of a smaller learning community — an academic school.

Susanna Caroselli

Meet Susanna Bede Caroselli, professor of art history and winner of the Smith Outstanding Teacher Award for full professors.

"She is one of the most humble people I know which says a lot when I mention that she's also one of the most wise and knowledgeable people I've encountered. . . . She has such a magnetic, approachable personality and an infectious love for her subject."

"She is completely invested in her students. She cares about the individual and lives a non-judgmental, absolutely Christian life. She is internationally recognized for her knowledge and helps students to recognize what is going on outside of college and in the real world."

--Words of commendation from Messiah students nominating Caroselli for this award

My daughter volunteers with Alzheimer’s patients as part of
her psychology class. She doesn’t just read about it in a book,
she’s involved and making a difference.

Parent

"My philosophy courses at Messiah have challenged me to think hard about my faith. The back-and-forth has matured me spiritually and academically. I feel more complete as a person."
