Campus Life

Living on campus is more than a matter of convenience; it’s a matter of connections. To help you make strong connections right from the very start, Messiah has created a “first-year experience” that brings new students together in the residence halls as well as the classrooms. By living in Messiah’s three designated “first-year” residence buildings, first-year students have a unique opportunity to develop relationships with people who often become their lifelong friends.

“We want our students to grow as whole people—academically, athletically, and, most importantly, as committed Christians who understand how their faith affects everything they do,” says Messiah College athletic director Jerry Chaplin. “We look for coaches who not only know their sports well but also have callings as Christian role models and teachers.” That explains why Messiah College’s 20 intercollegiate athletic teams have a reputation for excellence both in and outside the classroom.

Financial Aid

We work hard to keep a Messiah education affordable. In 2006-07, the College expended almost $20 million in financial aid to help families send their students to Messiah College. We believe the kind of personal attention our faculty provides is important. With a student/faculty ratio of 14:1, Messiah students are never just another face in the classroom. Our professors are not only experts in their fields, but also mentors who journey with students as they grow and develop in intellect, character, and Christian faith.

Making certain that as many students as possible can enjoy the unique Christian college experience Messiah College offers is a key priority of president Kim S. Phipps. By providing students with critical financial aid and enhancing curricular and co-curricular programs, Messiah’s newest financial aid initiative, Opening Doors to Educational Opportunities, is just one example of the College’s commitment to ensuring that generations of students receive an education that equips them to become agents of change in the world.

Ninety-nine percent of first-year students at Messiah College receive financial aid because we know that affording a Messiah education, as valuable as it is, can seem daunting. To help families offset the costs, we offer academic and merit-based scholarships, as well as need-based financial aid in the form of grants, loans, and work-study. We want as many students as possible to have the opportunity to earn the kind of education that employers tell us produces “exceptional employees” who “demonstrate exemplary character.”

Opportunities to grow in your faith and fellowship with other Christians abound at Messiah College. Our twice-weekly chapel services and mid-week Powerhouse—a popular, student-led praise service—are chances to join with other students, faculty, and staff in worship and reflection. You can also participate in programs like Issachar’s Loft—a discipleship program that provides leadership opportunities and weekly fellowship—and Life groups, which bring small groups together through Bible study, prayer, worship, service, and a commitment to each other’s well-being.

Chapel is a big part of the Messiah experience. You’ll have the opportunity to not only worship but also learn about yourself and others by participating in a diverse community of Christians. Special music, challenging speakers, shared experiences, and examination of critical spiritual and social issues make chapel a time when the Messiah community comes together to further integrate faith and learning.

Messiah College is a place where you can feel at home and comfortably explore your spiritual identity. “When students enroll at Messiah College, I want them to find a place of belonging—where they can discover more about themselves, God, and God’s creation,” says College president Kim Phipps.

Professors at Messiah College are not only accomplished scholars but also practicing Christians. Each professor acknowledges his or her faith commitment by signing a statement of faith as one condition of employment with the College. “No matter what class I’m taking, my professors always strive to apply what we’re learning to our spiritual walk,” says Jesse Hall ’09. Whatever your interest, whatever the class, your Messiah professors will help—and challenge—you to apply your Christian values in ways that are academically rigorous and personally meaningful.

One thing that makes Messiah College distinct is that, in addition to traditional majors (called “liberal arts”)—like English, math, biology, or psychology—we also offer a number of other majors—such as engineering or nursing—that prepare students for specific career paths. We call these majors the “applied sciences.” But no matter which of our more than 50 majors you choose, you’ll find lots of ways to apply what you learn in your classes at Messiah.

Service - it’s an integral part of a Messiah College education. Our many local, national, and international service-learning opportunities help students develop a lifelong commitment to serve others and give back to the communities in which they live and work after graduation. The Messiah College Philadelphia Campus, which partners with Temple University in Philadelphia, is just one of our programs that allow students to explore their long-term sense of vocation and calling while living and serving in an urban environment.
