Messiah Athletics Now On Twitter, Facebook

Messiah athletics will officially be making the leap into the realm of social media this year.

Grantham, PA — At long last, Messiah athletics will have a presence in the realm of social media.

The department announced the launch of both a Twitter page and a Facebook fan page Wednesday, officially bringing Falcons’ sports programs into the fold.

“It’s overdue, but we’re excited about what these avenues will provide us in regards to getting the word out about Messiah athletics,” said Cory Furman, Assistant Athletics Director for Public Relations and Marketing. “This is something that people have been asking for.”

Furman was part of a campus-wide Social Media Committee last spring, a group that studied the nuances of endeavors such as Twitter and Facebook — offering a final recommendation to college administration upon its findings.

“Hosting a Facebook fan page or a Twitter feed for our department is a little different than a personal account,” Furman said. “When you’re talking about social media, you’re talking about a forum for conversation. We wanted to study what other institutions and businesses have done, what issues they’ve faced and what worked best. Now that a plan is in place, we’re really excited about the possibilities.”

Furman said that Messiah’s Facebook page will be a resource for photo albums and videos — items that are often curtailed due to the limitations of the department’s official website. He also said he believes that the Falcons’ Twitter feed will be especially useful during post-season events, when the demand for instant updates is at a premium.

“We live in a world where, if an event is not webcast or statted live, fans feel disconnected,” Furman said. “By following us on Twitter, people can get real-time updates sent to their phones, PDAs or computers. The bigger the event, the more often the updates. It’s just another way to provide immediate information to those who seek it.”
