Summer Sport Camps Continue To Grow In 2009
Posted: 6/22/2009
A national championship program again in 2008, Messiah women's soccer is offering camps running June 19-21, June 22-26 and August 2-6 this summer.

Grantham, PA — A struggling global economy has seemingly had little effect on the popularity of Messiah College summer sport camps, as the iconic NCAA Division III institution will again welcome over 2,500 boys and girls to varying sessions over the better part of the next two months.

Both women’s basketball and field hockey opened the camp slate last week, while men’s basketball, women’s soccer and softball will hold opening runs of their respective camps this week.

With three Messiah teams coming off of national championship seasons, Messiah assistant athletics director Cory Furman said the Falcons’ niche extends beyond intercollegiate competition.

“Obviously, this place produces some incredible results in a lot of different sports at the NCAA Division III level,” Furman said. “That’s clearly a key to the success of our camps, but I believe the way we pursue that success is just as big of factor. Parents understand that our camps provide a lot more than skills and technique, but a positive environment that fosters growth beyond the specific skill set. Our teams have proven you can win championships and have great character.”

Men’s soccer, women’s soccer and softball all claimed respective NCAA Division III National Championships in 2008-2009, while the Falcons’ field hockey team competed in its 12th Final Four. Messiah’s women’s basketball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the 10th straight year, while the women’s lacrosse team won the MAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the 13-year history of its program.

“Our coaches and athletes really love this time of year,” Furman said. “It’s incredible the number of former campers that are now playing at Messiah, in a variety of sports. That may be the biggest testament to what these camps are about — the same kids come back year after year, often bringing new friends. You can’t bottle up the types of experiences you get here. It really is something special.”

Messiah’s summer clinics will run through early August, while limited roster spots are still available in a number of sport camps. Parents interested in enrolling their child can access detailed camp brochures by visiting the sport-specific site (navigation is to the left), or by simply clicking on the camps button located at the top of all GoMessiah.com pages.

Immediate, last-second camp requests are best suited for camp directors. Phone and email contacts can be found at GoMessiah.com’s directory page.

The following is a synopsis of all sports camps offered at Messiah this summer. Many sports offer a variety of camps based on age and ability, while others offer both day and overnight camps. Those details are available within the camp-specific brochures, available as pdf files via Messiah’s camp page.
