Winter Sports 2008-2009 Schedules Released
Posted: 7/11/2008
Messiah's women's basketball team will be hunting for its second straight national championship game appearance this year.

Grantham, PA — The Messiah College athletics department released 2008-2009 schedules for men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling Friday, detailing the traditional winter sports’ competition slate for the upcoming academic year. Indoor track and field — in conjunction with the outdoor spring season — has yet to announce its schedule, as does and men’s and women’s swimming, which will be in its first season of competition in ’08-’09.

The Falcons’ women’s basketball team highlighted Friday’s announcement, however, as Messiah looks to make a second consecutive run to the NCAA Division III National Championship game this winter. The 2007-2008 version finished with a program-best 30-3 record en route to the title contest, capping the program’s ninth straight appearance in NCAA Tournament competition and second trip overall to the championship game.

Head coach Mike Miller has again added quality competition to this year’s women's basketball schedule, as Messiah will take to the road to face ’07-’08 tournament qualifier University of Scranton (Dec. 2) and national-power Kean University (Dec. 10). The Falcons host Baruch College Jan. 12, the only team other than Kean to hand Messiah a loss during regular-season play last year.

Fans will have to wait to catch the men’s basketball team early on, as Messiah will play its first eight contests away from Brubaker Auditorium. The men’s basketball schedule features three road tournaments throughout the regular season, culminating with a trip to Westmont College — in beautiful Santa Barbara, California — during the final week of December.

A young and promising wrestling team should help make up for early-season entertainment value on campus, as the wrestling schedule boasts three home events before the first week of December is complete. Head coach Bryan Brunk will also guide his team to a number of storied meets on the road, including the Bud Whitehill Duals (Jan. 9-10) and the Wheaton College Invitational (Jan. 30-31), located just outside of Chicago. Messiah finished the 2007-2008 season ranked 26th in the nation at the Division III level.
