Cory Furman begins his third year as assistant athletics director for public/media relations and marketing at Messiah College in the 2009-2010 academic year, continuing his work in a newly created position within the school’s intercollegiate athletics department.

Furman, who spent the previous six years as the sports information director and head assistant men’s basketball coach at Goshen College (NAIA, Goshen, Ind.), brings a high level of energy to the Falcons’ staff, overseeing Messiah’s sports information department and serving as the main contact in media relations and marketing endeavors for Messiah athletics.

Arriving in November of 2007, Furman has already made considerable improvements within Messiah’s athletics department, unveiling a completely new athletics website in April of 2008 while upgrading a variety of promotional pieces both on and off campus. The Falcons’ teams have flourished during that time, winning three team national championships and appearing in five team Final Fours while boasting an invidiual national championship in track and field.

“My initial goal was to increase the manner in which Messiah’s student-athletes are promoted and recognized, and we are on the right track,” Furman said. “This place is so successful in so many ways, I want to help tell the stories of what goes on here.”

Graduating from Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1999, Furman successfully changed the landscape of the sports information director position while at Goshen, expanding its capabilities and professionalism. Furman guided the concept and design of a new athletics website during his tenure, while serving as the lead in several fund-raising efforts. He was responsible for the daily management and upkeep of Goshen’s official athletics website, along with all other promotional and record-keeping responsibilities for the institution’s 14 intercollegiate athletics programs.

As Goshen’s head assistant men’s basketball coach, Furman helped guide the program to its first-ever 20-win seasons and aided the team to 87 total wins during his time on the bench, the most wins of any coaching staff in school history. Furman was also the lead recruiter for some of the school's best players, landing the program's only NAIA All-American performers to date.

Prior to arriving at Goshen, Furman was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Luther College (NCAA Div. III) in Decorah, Iowa. He continues to teach at various basketball camps during the summer months, including Duke University, The University of Kansas and North Carolina State University. Furman has also served as a resident coach at the prestigious Five-Star Basketball Camp, and has served as station master at the Five-Star Backcourt Camps.

Furman is currently completing his thesis en route to a master’s degree in athletic administration from Ball State, finishing his graduate work in the spring of 2000. Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, Furman resides with his wife, Tera, in Mechanicsburg.
