Freshman Travis Thome

Annville, PA — Messiah College freshman Travis Thome was named the MAC Commonwealth Pitcher of the Week Monday, earning the Falcons their fourth league award of the season and second for an outstanding pitching performance.

Thome, a right-hander from Schaefferstown, Pa., started and won two league games for Messiah last week, earning pitching wins in a 14-1 win at Lebanon Valley College (Apr. 7) and a 5-4 decision at Widener University (Apr. 12).

Thome held his cumulative opponents to just a .157 batting average on the week, striking out a total seven batters while posting an overall earned run average of just 1.93. He threw seven innings in both wins, while giving up just three hits to LVC and five to Widener.

“Travis has been great for us this year, and is really starting to settle into pitching at this level,” said Bryan Engle, Messiah head coach. “I know we expect great things out of him not only this year, but in the years to come. The best part about that is, he does as well.”

Thome was the second Falcon hurler to win conference player of the week honors in as many weeks, as he joined senior Dan Kern who claimed the accolade Apr. 7. Senior Craig Mease joined Kern with player of the week honors on that date as well. Mease also won that award Mar. 24.

“These individual honors are great, and we’re always humbled by outside entities’ accolades, but we are about team first here,” Engle said. “The guys that have won these awards here are some of the best examples of that. We’ve got a great group of young men.”

Messiah will look to finish the remainder of the regular season in strong fashion, as the team has a date with fourth-ranked College of New Jersey Tuesday afternoon before a crucial league series with Elizabethtown College this weekend. The Falcons will host TCNJ Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in a single, nine-inning contest.
