Annville, PA — The Messiah College baseball team had a pair of honorees this week at the conference level, as senior Craig Mease was named the MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week and classmate Dan Kern the league pitcher of the week, a pair of awards coming after the Falcons posted a 3-0 mark over the past week’s action. Mease, a second baseman from Quakertown, Pa., earned his second conference award of the season following a three game stretch in which he finished eight for 10 from the plate. He generated three doubles in Messiah's undefeated week, which included a victory over Juniata College, snapping an 11-game winning streak for the Eagles. In addition to Mease's eight hits, the senior added seven runs, five RBI, two walks and a stolen base over the course of the three games. Mease also was errorless on the field in 12 chances. Kern, meanwhile, threw a complete-game, four-hitter in Messiah’s 11-0 conference victory over Lebanon Valley College on Saturday. The righty had three strikeouts and no walks to move to 5-2 on the season. In a work-man-like effort, Kern threw only 66 pitches over the complete game victory. “Craig and Dan have continued to step up and be great leaders for us this year,” said Bryan Engle, Messiah head coach. “We have talked at length about making their senior year a great season and to this point they are paving that road. At the plate and on the field, Craig has been terrific and has really set a tone for our ballclub. When Dan is on the field, a confidence is among our team that we will be in every ballgame that he throws.” Messiah’s other win during the week came in a 7-4 win over Lebanon Valley, the second of last Saturday’s double-header. For Mease, the league award was the second of the season, as he was named the Mar. 24 MAC Commonwealth P.O.W. following a 5-0 team result the week prior. The Falcons will next finish the league series with the Flying Dutchmen Monday, as Friday rains postponed the single, nine-inning contest. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at LVC.
