Falcons Wrap Up Road Swing With Dominating, 6-0 Win At King's
Junior Amber Philpot scored a pair of goals Wednesday afternoon, helping Messiah to its most lopsided win to date.
By Cody Swartz, GoMessiah.com reporter Wednesday afternoon at King’s College, the Falcons got exactly that. Backed by a strong team performance, Messiah (7-0) raced out to score three goals in the game’s first 10-plus minutes, cruising to a 6-0 win at Betzler Fields. Messiah’s largest margin of victory on the season, Wednesday’s win came after a pair of 3-2 decisions in extra time — the first coming against #14 Lynchburg College in double overtime and the second coming at second-ranked Salisbury University on Saturday. And while Wednesday’s victory ended Messiah’s streak of nail-biters, it also concluded a four-game stretch away from home, with the Falcons’ next two tilts set to transpire at Anderson Field. Regardless of the location of Wednesday’s game, the Falcons appeared ready to play from the opening tap, striking early and often. Senior Katie Love got things started with a scored off a cross to the left post just over four minutes into the game, while classmate Jenna Max followed with a goal off a loose ball that Love redirected less than four minutes later. When junior midfielder Amber Philpot scored off a feed from Max at the 10:07 mark, the Falcons had built a 3-0 lead that was never threatened by King’s (4-3). Philpot scored her second goal of the afternoon at the 26:43 mark, this one coming off an assist from senior Liz Ziegler, who totaled three helpers on the day. The Falcons took a confident 4-0 lead and 11-0 advantage in shots into halftime and never let up. The defense played strong the entire game — allowing just five Monarch shots — while successfully thwarting a total of six King’s penalty corner opportunities on the day. Early in the second half, the tandem of Ziegler-to-Love struck again, this time at the 42:13 mark, handing the Falcons a 5-0 lead. Freshman forward Emily Hursh capped off the scoring for the day, taking a pass from senior midfielder Katrina Campbell and sending it into the goal at the 68:21 mark — notching her first collegiate goal as a result. Senior Ashley Mowery again was stellar in goal, recording two saves without allowing a goal in close to 56 minutes of action. Mowery gave way to freshman Angie Klaczak, who finished the team shutout with 14 shutout minutes of her own between the pipes. Messiah head coach Jan Trapp was able to utilize the extent of her bench in the win, as 24 Falcons players saw game action. The Falcons will make the aforementioned return to Anderson Field Saturday, as the team opens MAC Commonwealth play against newly-joined league foe Alvernia University (4-2). Game time is set for 1 p.m.
