PSU Harrisburg Fall Classic: Burkhart Takes Top Spot, Team As Well
Harrisburg, PA – On Friday afternoon the Falcons collected a team score of 302 at Dauphin Highlands for the 2011 PSU Harrisburg Fall Classic. Junior Matt Burkhart had the days best score shooting a 70 for the course. Not to be out done by themselves, on Staurday Messiah shot an impressive 295 with Burkhart tying his Friday score of 70.
Burkhart took the top spot by an outstanding 7 strokes over Adam Dupler of York who came in second. Junior Mick Farlling and Freshman Austin Galaska tied for eighth, each with a combined score of 151 between both rounds.
"We knew we were facing good competition, but the guys played well. All five shot under 80 on Friday and they did not give up a lot of strokes late in the rounds," stated Messiah Coach Troy Boone.
What was so impressive about Saturday is that the players were dealing with even more challenging weather conditions. Boone was proud of his players for the way the fought through the conditions. "You find out what your guys are made of when they have to play in the cold and rain. I was proud of the way they all battled through the elements and were able to come out with an even better team round on Saturday."
The Falcons have goals set in place for the season and they know to be nationally competitive they need to be shooting at or below 300. This weekend they did just that. With a 302 on Friday and an impressive 7 shots lower on Saturday (295) Messiah finished in first place out of eight teams.
This victory will be helpful for Messiah's upcoming schedule. "This is good for us going into this week. We have some real quality opponents and will have to reach our goals to stay competitive. This win helps set the stage for the final push of our fall season" said Boone.
On Monday (10/3) the Falcons travel to Lebanon Valley College and will compete at the Lebanon Country Club at 12:30 pm. The final event of the Fall season will take place on Thursday (10/6) as the team heads to E-town where they play at the Country Club of Hershey East at noon.
