Hawk Earns Second Team All-MAC Commonwealth Honors
Junior Andy Hawk earned his second all-conference honor this season.
Annville, PA — Junior Andy Hawk has been named one of the top performers in the MAC Commonwealth Conference, the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation announced Wednesday. Hawk earned Second Team Commonwealth All-Conference honors for the second straight season, leading Messiah in points (11.8 ppg), rebounds (7.4 rpg) overall field goal percentage (52.7 percent) and three-point percentage (48.4 percent). “Andy Hawk is the ultimate team player, and is very deserving of this recognition,” said Rick Van Pelt, Messiah head coach. “I have described some of the players from our past as pure competitors. By that I mean that they were intrinsically motivated and driven to compete. They did not need a crowd or the perfect environment, all they needed was someone to put a challenge in front of them and immediately they were focused on trying to win. Andy either has that gift naturally or he learned it from some of the great players who he’s played with along the line. Either way, I’m glad he’s competing for us.” Hawk led the Falcons in scoring on eight occasions and in rebounding 18 times during the 2008-2009 season, notching six double-doubles. His 23-point performance in the team’s 63-50 win over Arcadia University on Jan. 14 was a career high, as was his 15 rebounds against Randolph-Macon College Nov. 18. Within league play, Hawk finished first in three-point field goal percentage (53.8 percent), third in overall rebounding (7.2 rpg) and third in overall field goal percentage (54.9 percent). The New Cumberland, Pa. native scored in double figures in 18 total games, hitting the double-digit mark in rebounding six times. “I am excited that he has one more year in our program so that we can soak up as much of that positive competitiveness that he brings to our team,” Van Pelt said. “Many times the top players in a program may not always liked by the younger players. That is not the case with Andy. In our post-season meetings several of our freshman said how surprised they were early in the year that Andy and our other upperclassmen would come over to their rooms and spend time with them. Andy is a great leader and a first-class young man. I am looking forward to working with him next year during his senior season.” Hawk’s all-league honor was the second of his career, as he joined 2008 graduate Darryl Brown with all-conference accolades last season. Widener University’s Charles Jones was named MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year. Joe Meehan of Lebanon Valley College earned MAC Rookie of the Year honors. After guiding his team to both the regular-season and conference tournament titles, Widener head coach Chris Carideo was voted league coach of the year.
