Junior Jeff Ziegler

Annville, PA — Messiah College junior attack Jeff Ziegler was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Monday, an award coming following a highly productive two-game week for the Taneytown, Maryland native. It was the first league player of the week honor for a Messiah player this season. Kyle Gilfoy of Lycoming College was named the MAC Defender/Goalie of the Week Monday afternoon as well.

Ziegler led the Falcons to two MAC Conference wins last week, scoring 10 goals and adding two assists.  He scored six goals — including the game winner in double overtime — to lift Messiah to a 12-11 victory over Lycoming Wednesday, while adding four goals and an assist in leading Messiah to a 12-7 win over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Saturday.

That contest — coupled with the result of another league game — pushed Messiah (7-4, 4-0) to sole possession of first in the conference standings, as the Falcons' 4-0 record is the only unblemished mark remaining.

“Jeff has been playing solid offense on an attack unit that has combined for 70 goals and 29 assists,” said John Dennis, Messiah assistant coach. “Jeff has scored 24 goals and 11 assists for us, in addition to leading our attack with 24 groundballs this year. The attack unit has worked hard in the riding game to disrupt 78 clears as well. Ziegler has developed into a team leader as a junior and has really begun to hit his stride the last few games against some tough opponents.”

Messiah will next face perhaps its toughest opponent of all — in a non-conference match-up — as second-ranked Gettysburg College will visit Messiah Wednesday. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
