Messiah will rely on junior J.J. Miller to create both possession and scoring chances from his middie position.
Baltimore, MD — Junior J.J. Miller has been named honorable mention pre-season All-American by InsideLacrosse.com, the school announced Wednesday. A two-time All-Middle Atlantic Conference selection, Miller was one of 54 athletes tabbed with honorable mention All-America status by the InsideLacrosse organization, one of the sport’s leading media outlets. “It is a well-deserved honor,” Messiah head coach Geof Weisenborn said Wednesday. “J.J. is our hardest worker. He spends countless hours improving his game. He is never satisfied with his current level of play.” Miller led Messiah’s MAC-leading .631 face-off percentage as a sophomore, coming up with 156 of 237 chances (.658), the ninth-best clip in the nation. His 19 goals and 30 points were second-best on the team, while his 9.36 ground-ball-per-game average was fourth best in all of NCAA Division III. As a freshman, Miller scored 10 goals and added three assists, collecting 112 of 198 face-offs — a .566 success rate. He was named the MAC Rookie of the Year, helping Messiah to a perfect 7-0 mark in league play. Weisenborn said he again expects big things from Miller, as the Odenton, Md. native struggled through mononucleosis through the latter half of the 2009 season — putting up ridiculous numbers despite the illness. “J.J. is a true all-around midfielder,” Weisenborn said. “He is dominant at the face-off x, is a threat to score every time on the offensive end and plays great one-on-one defense.” InsideLacrosse.com named 12 athletes to each of its First, Second and Third Team pre-season All-American rosters. Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham’s Kevin Shadiack and Alex Kajenki, Elizabethtown College’s Aaron Weber, Lycoming College’s Mike Doherty and Widener University’s Nick Politarhos were the other MAC representatives on the honorable mention squad.
