Falcons Honored With Mid-Atlantic All-Region Elections

The NSCAA honored the Falcons on with three men's soccer players being elected Mid-Atlantic All-Region.

Kansas City, KS – The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced the All-Region awards for NCAA Division III Men's Soccer on Friday, with the Falcons landing three spots.

Senior forward Danny Thompson was named to the First Team, with senior defender Jordan Sands and freshman forward Jack Thompson earning Third Team recognitions.

For Danny Thompson, the All-Region award is the first in his career. A 2011 First Team All-Commonwealth honoree for the second straight season, Thompson led the Falcons in points (38) and goals (16) in 2011, placing third on the team in assists (6).

Sands also receives All-Region recognition for the first time in his career after earning First Team All-Commonwealth honors this season. The defender from Reading, Pa., anchored a defense for Messiah that allowed only 10 goals in 2011, with opponents managing only seven shots per game. Sands also scored four goals for the Falcons this season.

Freshman Jack Thompson, a native of Hudson, Ohio, the All-Region honor follows First Team All-Commonwealth and Commonwealth Rookie of the Year honors in 2011. The younger brother of three other men's soccer players-- Nick '11, Danny, and junior Logan-- Jack was second on the team in points (28) and goals (10), while leading the Falcons in assists (8).

This year the Falcons were again a national contender, ranked number one in the nation as they entered the NCAA Division III National Championships tournament with a record of 18-0-1. After receiving a bye through the First Round, the Falcons were stunningly upset by Neumann University in the Second Round on Sunday, November 13. Neumann's shocking, 1-0 victory came after a goal in the game's 98th minute of play.

The end to the 2011 season was a pause to the one of the most impressive in NCAA history. The Messiah men's soccer team were three-time defending national champions entering this fall season, as well as owners of eight of the last 11 national titles.

Danny Thompson, Jordan Sands, and senior teammates Sam Woodworth, Kent Ramirez, Trevor Lee, Derek Black, Tom Renko, and Beau Herndon graduate as three-time NCAA Division III National Championships, four-time Commonwealth Conference Champions, and owners of an overall record of 87-5-3.
