One of the best goalkeepers to ever play NCAA Division III soccer will assume the role of goalkeeper coach in 2009, as ’07 Messiah grad and two-time All-American Dustin Shambach joins first-year head coach Brad McCarty’s initial staff.

Shambach, who volunteered with the Falcons’ program in each of the last two seasons, begins full-time work just three years removed from his playing days.

And that’s a good thing, because Shambach’s playing career was spectacular: The athletic keeper helped Messiah to three consecutive NCAA Division III National Championships (2004, 2005 and 2006), posting an 86-5-5 record as a four-year starter in goal. Shambach is one of only two goalkeepers in the history of NCAA Division III men’s soccer to go through an NCAA Tournament without allowing a goal (five games), while his .38 career goals allowed average ranks third all-time in NCAA Division III history.

“Dustin holds practically every goalkeeping record we have at Messiah and has shown the ability to transfer his knowledge of goalkeeping to others,” said Brad McCarty, Messiah head coach. “When Shambach was a player, he was the heart and soul of our team. He’s continued to show his love for Messiah men’s soccer through his commitment to the program, and his contributions will be critical to our success.”

A two-year captain, Shambach holds the Messiah career record in shutouts (58) and career goals against average (.38). He occupies three of the top four single-season GAA marks, while Shambach seemed to thrive as the competition increased: The Manheim, Pa. native allowed just two goals in a total 18 NCAA Tournament games.

Shambach ranks ninth all-time in NCAA Division III career minutes played, while his 15 solo shutouts in 25 games during the 2004 season was 13th-best in NCAA Division III history. His .29 GAA in 2004 is the 15th-best single-season mark in the history of NCAA Division III men’s soccer.

Since graduation, Shambach has worked as the Carlisle Area Youth Soccer Club Director and Trainer, overseeing travel and recreation teams while overseeing game day operations and varying administrative functions. Shambach has received both his NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma and his NSCAA National Diploma.

Shambach is single and currently resides in Camp Hill, Pa.
