Senior William Tanis helped Messiah sweep doubles action Wednesday, but the team went just 1-5 in singles flights.

Carlisle, PA — Less than a week after capturing its third consecutive MAC Commonwealth Championship, the Messiah College men’s tennis team hit a slight snag Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 5-4 decision at nearby Dickinson College.

A Falcons’ sweep in doubles play was not enough to overcome a 5-1 deficit in singles action, as senior Nate Ipsen was the team’s only solo winner (in claiming an 8-6 win over Dickinson’s Ross Anstactt at the top singles position).

Agreed to be played as an abbreviated match — all flights were played in eight-game pro-sets — Messiah head coach Frank Petre came up just short in a homecoming of sorts, as the Falcons’ first-year leader had coached Dickinson’s women’s tennis team in the early 1990’s.

“Dickinson got off to a fast start today by wining five of the six singles matches,” Petre said. “Nate, however, proved that he can play at any level of D III tennis with a hard-fought win over Ross Anstactt.”

Freshman Jansen Hein fell at the number four singles position by just an 8-5 count, Messiah’s closest thing to a win outside of Ipsen’s victory.

Messiah’s doubles teams then provided an impressive — yet moot — sweep, led by senior William Tanis and junior Sam Shorts posting an 8-2 decision at the second flight.

“All of the doubles teams played very well together against Dickinson,” Petre said. “I hope we can continue to play this well through the weekend and into next week.”

Messiah (8-8-1) will next travel to the MAC Conference Individual Tournament, pitting players from the Commonwealth Conference against those from the Freedom league. Those matches will take place at King’s College Saturday and Sunday. The Falcons will then await word of their NCAA Tournament opponent and location. Those announcements will be made by the NCAA Monday.
