Junior Sam Shorts came up with one of Messiah's two team points at York.

York, PA — It was a difficult day on the hard courts for the Messiah College men’s tennis team Wednesday afternoon, as the squad dropped a 7-2 decision at nearby York College.

Messiah (2-6-1) captured wins at the number four singles position and in the number one doubles slot, dropping its first team decision to York (9-2) in four years.

“Messiah has had some good matches against York over the years, and they just happened to be the better team today,” said first-year Messiah head coach Frank Petre. “You have to give them the credit. They were good competition for us, and we’ll look to improve as we enter conference play next.”

Seniors Nate Ipsen and Jonathan Siemen led the Falcons with an 8-5 win over York’s Ron Ho and Jeff Mansfield in the number one doubles flight, while junior Sam Shorts claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Spartans’ Ho in the number four singles match.

Messiah came out on the wrong end of narrow defeats at number one and two singles competition, where Ipsen and Siemen dropped 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) and 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 10-8 decisions, respectively.

“Jonathan and Nate had a great win at number one doubles against a very good opponent,” Petre said. “Jonathan then worked really hard, only to fall in a daylight-shortened three-set match at number two singles. It was neck-and-neck in the final set, but (York’s Paul) Graci found enough points at the end to turn it in his favor.”

Shorts pushed his overall record to 3-3 at the number four singles position with his win. Messiah dropped the remainder of its singles matches in straight sets, while the Falcons’ number two and three doubles teams split winning four games.

Messiah will next turn to MAC Commonwealth play, where the team will be vying for its third consecutive league title. The squad will host Albright College Saturday. Match time is set for 12 p.m.
