Squad Stays Atop MAC Commonwealth With 9-0 Blitzing At Albright
Sophomore Jansen Hein kept his flawless mark within MAC Commonwealth play in tact Thursday at Albright.
Reading, PA — The Falcons made quick work of their latest conference opponent Thursday afternoon, handing host Albright College a 9-0 defeat in the most expeditious of fashions.
Messiah (7-6, 3-0) surrendered a total of just eight games within six flights of singles play, while dropping just six games throughout doubles play. The CC-game to VC-game win was by far the Falcons’ most lopsided of the season to date, while Albright (0-6, 0-2) remained searching for its first win of the year.
“We played well today,” said Sheila Bush, Messiah head coach. “Albright was a bit overmatched, but we took care of business. It was good to see that type of mindset up and down the lineup.”
Capturing just its second 9-0 win of the season, Bush’s team was paced by sophomore Jansen Hein and senior Sam Shorts, who did not drop a single game all afternoon long. Hein dispatched the Lions’ Lee Fura 6-0, 6-0 at the number one singles flight, while Shorts took care of Albright’s Kevin Gauby by the same score in the number two singles position.
The tandem also paired for an 8-0 win at the top doubles slot, keeping the pair unbeaten in league play on the partner circuit.
Hein’s singles win kept his overall career record unblemished in MAC Commonwealth play both as a singles and doubles player.
Freshman Andrew Wismer joined with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the number five singles position, while junior Luke Ruch cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Albright’s Jason Lefkoe at the number three singles flight. Freshman Mike Elliott gave up just two games to the Lions’ Kevin Wong at the number four singles position (a 6-1, 6-1 win), while Wismer teamed with classmate Adam Sheir for a dominant 8-2 win at the third doubles spot.
Messiah won all singles matches in straight sets in the team win, marking the first time this season the team recorded such dominance.
The task will get considerably tougher following a brief layoff for the Easter holiday, as the Falcons will host MAC Commonwealth rival Lebanon Valley College next Wednesday at the Messiah College Tennis Complex. LVC currently sits in third within the league standings behind unbeaten Messiah and Elizabethtown College. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m.
