Messiah won its first ever softball national championship at Montclair State University in May.
Harrisburg, PA — The Messiah College intercollegiate athletics department is teaming up with the Harrisburg Senators to honor its national champion softball team, the school announced Wednesday. Messiah softball will be the guests of honor at next Wednesday’s (Sept. 2) Senators’ double-header against the Erie Sea Wolves, tossing out the first pitch to Game One while inviting all fans, friends and supporters of the family to Metro Bank Park for an evening of fun and fellowship. “We’re grateful to the Harrisburg Senators for working with us on this endeavor, and we’re excited to celebrate the softball team’s accomplishments in this way,” said Cory Furman, Messiah assistant athletics director. “The only downside to winning a national championship in the spring is that you return to an empty campus. We hope that Wednesday will be an adequate celebration for what these young ladies accomplished in May.” Messiah captured its first national championship in the sport of softball by winning its last 23 games of the year, eventually going a perfect 4-0 at the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championships despite being the only unranked team at the eight-squad event. The Falcons now welcome any and all to next Wednesday’s Senators game, as the team will throw out the first pitch to the 6 p.m. opener, engage in an ice cream-eating contest between innings and belt out Take Me Out To The Ballgame in the middle of the fifth inning — a slight departure from the norm due to the Senators’ seven-inning contests during double-headers. New Light — a Messiah student-based choir — will open the evening with the singing of the national anthem. Messiah fans and friends can then enjoy complimentary ice cream toward the end of the first ballgame on the newly constructed outfield boardwalk. “We’ve purchased a large number of general admission seats, and the new boardwalk at Metro Bank Park is absolutely phenomenal,” Furman said. “The entire area is conducive to hanging out and meeting our softball team, all while watching the Senators game. It really should be a great setup.” Fans can buy tickets in advance at the Messiah College Eisenhower Campus Center Ticket Window for $2.50 apiece. Directions to the ballpark and information on the Senators — the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals — is available at the official site of the Harrisburg Senators. “It’s our hope we’ll get a large crowd out to enjoy some late-summer baseball and congratulate our team for a truly remarkable year,” Furman said. “It may be a few months after the fact, but the excitement of winning the title is still fresh on campus. Next Wednesday night should be a really fun evening for everyone who comes out.”
