Shorthanded Roster Takes Part In E'Town Quadrangular
Messiah runners competed well in the steeplechase at the Elizabethtown Quadrangular.

Elizabethtown, PA — A limited number of athletes made the trip to nearby Elizabethtown College Tuesday afternoon, as the Messiah College track and field team took part in the Elizabethtown College Quadrangular.

Two Messiah athletes qualified for the MAC Conference Championships at the mid-week event, as sophomore Joshua Stone ran his first meet back from injury and easily qualified for the league event with a 10:51.88 time in the steeplechase. Freshman Megan Sisson did the same in the 800-meter run, finishing in a time of 2:30.18 — good for second overall at the meet.

In addition to the conference qualifying times, the Falcons received strong efforts from a variety of individuals, many of whom were attempting new events as well. Freshman Jared High threw a college personal best 153 feet, 11 inches in the javelin, while sophomore A.J. Smith won the event with a toss of 160 feet, 4 inches. Freshman Ryan Pastore put up another solid performance in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:13.80, while junior Jason Brown and sophomore Cory Kaufman competed in the 400-meter hurdles for the first time as collegians. Brown finished third in a time of 1:04.46, while Kaufman finished fifth in a clip of 1:05.43.

On the women’s slate, Messiah was led by freshman Philina Henton in the shot put (second place; 29 feet 10 inches) followed by sophomore Bridget Nace (third place; 28 feet, 6 and ¼ inches). Freshman Emily Olsen recorded a 12-second personal best in the 800 running a 2:49.07, while her :18.22 clip in the 110-meter hurdles was also a personal record.

Sophomore Jackie VanArsdale capped the Falcons’ afternoon, taking fourth place in the 1,500 in a time of 5:21.25.

Messiah’s limited numbers kept the team from registering much team success, as the Falcons’ short-handed roster finished fourth in both the men’s (12 total points) and women’s (16 total points) standings.

The squad should be back at full force for its next meet, as Messiah will travel to Widener University for the Widener Invitational this weekend. Events are slated to begin Friday and continue into Saturday.
