Fogelsanger Honored; Bates And Roach Prep For Nationals
Head coach Dale Fogelsanger, junior Kristen Bates and senior Patrick Roach prepare for a big weekend.

Terre Haute, IN — Senior Patrick Roach and junior Kristen Bates will represent Messiah College at this weekend’s NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championships, with Roach competing in the 800-meter run and Bates in both the pentathlon and 55-meter hurdles.

The tandem will be escorted by head coach Dale Fogelsanger, who on Thursday was named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III Mideast Region Men’s Coach of the Year.

In his 16th year at the helm, Fogelsanger guided the Messiah men’s team to the MAC Championship two weeks ago — the men’s first outright title in program history. Fogelsanger’s award was his first on the indoor circuit, adding to a pair of regional coach of the year honor in outdoor track and field — one on the men’s side and one on the women’s.

“It’s a nice honor and it’s great for Messiah to be recognized,” Fogelsanger said Thursday. “It’s a direct result of the exceptional effort from both the entire coaching staff and our kids.”

Bates will look to continue her outstanding indoor career this weekend on the campus of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, as the Landisburg, Pa. native looks to add to a pair of All-American honors captured last season. Bates finished third in the triple jump and fourth in the 55-meter hurdles last year, and enters this weekend’s 55-hurdles as the second seed and the pentathlon as the seventh seed.

Bates will begin her weekend with the pentathlon at 9 a.m. Friday, and will run in the 55-meter hurdle prelims at 4:35 p.m. Friday. The winners of the two heats plus the six next-fastest times advance to the 55-meter finals, to be ran at 2:25 p.m. Saturday.

Bates also qualified for the nationals in both the long jump and the triple jump, but in the interest of maximizing her performance, will only compete in the pentathlon and 55-meter hurdles.

Roach, meanwhile, makes his indoor national championship debut this weekend, competing in the open 800 after earning All-American honors in the 400-meter run at last year’s NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. The prelims of the men’s 800-meter race will take place at 5:55 p.m. Friday afternoon. The winners of each of the two heats plus the next four fastest will advance to the event finals Saturday at 3:45 p.m.

All events will take place at the Rose-Hulman Sports and Recreation Center in Terre Haute, Indiana. Two entities will be providing “official” national championship websites: Fans can get detailed meet information, schedule of events and heat sheets at the Rose-Hulman national championship site, while streaming video and live results will be posted at the USTFCCCA national championships site.
