Sophomore Olivia Scott (9) got the ball rolling Saturday at St. Mary's, and the top-ranked Falcons never looked back.

St. Mary’s City, MD — Letdown was not a problem for the top-ranked Messiah women’s soccer team Saturday afternoon, as the Falcons cruised to their fifth win in as many games via a 4-0 blanking of host St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

Fresh off an emotional, energy-sucking, 2-0 win over fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins University Wednesday night, Messiah (5-0) appeared no worse for the wear Saturday, tacking on a pair of goals in each half to keep things from getting remotely interesting with the Seahawks (2-2).

“I thought we played decent today,” said Scott Frey, Messiah head coach. “After we play so well Wednesday, it’s just hard to do it again. But we played good, solid soccer today. I was pleased with our discipline. Any win you can get on the road, you’ve got to feel good about.”

Frey’s club consumed both possession and scoring chances from the game’s outset, eventually recording a 32-3 advantage in total shots and a 13-2 discrepancy in corner kicks. The Falcons nearly got on the board just a minute into the action, when sophomore Olivia Scott banged a shot from eight yards out off the cross bar.

She wouldn’t have to wait terribly long for another opportunity, however, as Scott was the beneficiary of the first of multiple scrums in front of the St. Mary’s goal, slamming a shot into the net after Seahawks’ sophomore goalkeeper Lacey Johnson had tried to punch it out of danger at the 11:28 mark.

Messiah’s constant pressure led to another congregation in front of the Seahawks’ frame just 15 minutes later, as St. Mary’s failed to clear one of the Falcons’ nine first-half corner kicks. Sophomore Lisa Wingard was then able to get her leg to the ball around a St. Mary’s defender, pushing it into the netting from point-blank range with 26:38 elapsed.

The goal was Wingard’s first of the year, as Messiah took a 2-0 lead into the halftime intermission.

The final 45 minutes provided a similar script.

More Falcons’ ball control eventually yielded scores at the 79:46 and 82:38 moments, as senior Amanda Naeher and junior Erin Hench got into the scoring act. On the former, Naeher took a square ball from sophomore Leah Sipe and beat Johnson to the left; on the latter, Hench provided a fitting exclamation mark, ripping a blast from 25 yards out that crept in just beneath the cross bar.

Audible ‘oohs’ from the crowd perhaps alluded to a conclusion that the scoreboard reinforced: This game was completely one-sided.

“We failed to convert on some chances that we probably should have, but you’ve got to be pleased with creating those chances,” Frey said. “We’ve continued to defend well, and that’s been a big part of our creating scoring opportunities. We had a good effort today, and it yielded some solid soccer.”

Messiah will remain on the road for its next two contests, and will travel to Muhlenberg College Wednesday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
