McGinley Tabbed Second Team All-C'Wealth As Career Concludes
Fighting illness throughout much of her senior season, Christie McGinley continued to impress league coaches.
Annville, PA — For the second consecutive year, senior Christie McGinley has been named an All-Commonwealth Conference tennis player.
League coaches voted McGinley to Commonwealth Second Team status Friday, complementing a First Team All-Commonwealth honor she earned last season.
McGinley went just 4-7 as the Falcons’ top singles player during the past fall, but struggled through a nagging flu-like illness throughout the majority of the season — missing three straight matches in early September.
Playing at less than 100 percent upon her return to the court, McGinley dropped her first two singles matches — but rebounded to win four of her last seven outings as the Falcons’ ace. She finished the regular-season with straight sets wins over opponents from league rivals Arcadia University and Albright College, helping Messiah secure the three seed for the Commonwealth Conference Tournament.
In doubles play, McGinley teamed with junior Stacey Clark in the top flight, posting an overall record of 4-5. The tandem finished 3-2 in conference play. Clark was a First Team All-Commonwealth Conference performer last year.
Lebanon Valley College’s Sarah Grodzinski was named the Commonwealth Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, concluding her career with an incredible 75-10 record in singles play. Elizabethtown College’s Allison Burkhardt was named the league rookie of the year after posting a 14-9 overall singles mark. E’Town’s Matt Helsel was named Commonwealth Coach of the Year, guiding the Blue Jays to a 15-5 record overall and an eventual league championship, competing in NCAA Tournament play for the second time in the last three years.
