Grantham, PA — A joint effort between the Messiah College women’s volleyball program and the institution’s men’s club team will culminate with a boys’ camp this summer, the Falcons’ women’s program announced Tuesday.

Messiah will hold a two-day camp for boys entering the sixth through the 12th grade August 8th and 9th, the first-ever boys’ volleyball camp offered through Messiah College athletics.

“We basically look at this as an opportunity to fill a need,” said Judi Tobias, Messiah head women’s volleyball coach. “There is plenty of boys’ volleyball in the area, but there aren’t a lot of camp opportunities. We’re hoping that this will provide a great chance for boys in the area to get ready for the season, as well as improving their overall skills.”

Tobias will serve as camp director, getting assistance from Jerry Porr, among others. Porr served as head coach for the Messiah men’s club volleyball team, a squad that captured the 2008 NIRSA Division III National Championship this fall.

Cost of the camp is $125 per camper. A $50, non-refundable deposit made to Messiah Boys’ Volleyball Camp is due with each registration form. Deadline to register is July 30.

“We are hoping that we’ll get a great turnout,” said Tobias, who will also direct her 13th consecutive girls’ camp this summer. “We feel we’ve got some great tools here, and we’re hoping that the growing interest in boys’ volleyball will translate into good numbers.”
