Heffner, Mattie Earn Second Team All-Conference Accolades
Seniors Leslie Heffner (left) and Amy Mattie (right) were named all-league.
Annville, PA — Messiah senior outside hitters Leslie Heffner and Amy Mattie were named Second Team All-Commonwealth Conference selections, the Middle Atlantic States Athletic Corporation announced Tuesday.
The tandem paced Messiah’s offensive efforts throughout the 2008 season, as Heffner recorded a team-best 217 kills (2.47 kills per set) while Mattie provided 207 attacks for points — a 2.44 kill-per-set equivalent.
The all-league honors were the second such awards for both players, as Heffner was a first-team selection last year while Mattie — whose surname was Stabler at the time — graced the 2007 second team.
“Leslie and Amy will be tough people for us to replace,” said head coach Judi Tobias. “It’s nice to have them recognized again by the conference. They were good teammates and they worked hard at trying to get better.”
Heffner finished as the MAC Commonwealth leader in service aces (45 total; 0.52 per set average) while boasting the league’s sixth-highest kill total. Mattie, meanwhile, finished eighth in the conference in kills and fourth in service aces (39 total; 0.46 per set).
Heffner finished the season with an .819 serve receive percentage and Mattie a .754 clip, while Heffner averaged nearly half a block per set with 31 block assists and four solo efforts. Mattie finished with 254 total digs — second best on the team — while Heffner scooped 188, the squad’s third-best effort.
“Leslie and Amy helped raise our standard for success, and I think they’ve paved the way for some of our younger players as a result,” Tobias said. “We expect more now because of Leslie and Amy’s contribution over the years. They leave big holes to fill, but I think we have the ability to fill them thanks in large part to their efforts.”
Lebanon Valley College’s Erin Yost was named the Commonwealth Player of the Year, while Widener University’s Jamie Ballew was tabbed the league’s Rookie of the Year. LVC’s Wayne Perry was honored with the Commonwealth Coach of the Year award, guiding the Dutchmen to a 31-2 regular-season record, the MAC Commonwealth Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth.
Messiah finished with a 19-7 record overall and a 3-3 mark in conference play. The Falcons qualified for post-season play as the league’s fourth seed, but saw its season conclude in a 0-3 loss to LVC in the league semi-finals.
