Annville, PA — Freshmen Lindsay King and Lauren Rees were honored by the Commonwealth Conference Thursday, as each landed a spot on the All-Commonwealth Second Team.

King, a 6-0 middle hitter, paced Messiah with 85 total blocks while Rees, a 5-10 outside hitter, blasted a team-leading 288 kills — helping the Falcons to an 18-14 record overall and a 5-2 mark in league play.

The tandem led a youth movement on the Falcons’ club, as 11 of the squad’s 13 total roster spots were comprised by freshmen and sophomores.

Rees was an instant hit, joining the club after an early-season illness and paying major dividends throughout the year. The Fishers, Ind. native averaged a team-best 3.13 kills per game and was second on the squad in service aces (52), scooping 206 digs as well — fourth-best on the team.

In league play, Rees blasted 3.04 kills per game — third-best in the Commonwealth.

King, meanwhile, was a big presence at the net, garnering 21 solo- and 64 assist-blocks on the year, leading the team in the latter.

King’s .242 inter-conference hitting percentage was eighth-best, while the Atglen, Pa. native appeared in 119 of Messiah’s 125 total sets played.

Messiah’s 5-2 league record was good enough to capture third-place in the regular-season standings, while the team dropped a somewhat surprising — and certainly disheartening — 3-0 decision at second-seed Elizabethtown College in the Commonwealth Conference Semi-Finals, concluding the team’s season.

Lebanon Valley College junior Joelle Snyder was named the Commonwealth Player of the Year, while Flying Dutchmen head coach Wayne Perry captured coach of the year honors for the fourth time in his career and second year in a row.

Elizabethtown College freshman Lindsay Palm was voted Commonwealth Rookie of the Year, also appearing on the all-league’s second team.

Regular-season and tournament champion Lebanon Valley tied Elizabethtown on the all-conference ballot with four selections apiece. Widener University — which finished in fourth-place — garnered three all-league choices.
