Fourth-Ranked Delaware Valley Gets Past #23 Falcons, 39-9
Junior Matt McHugh was one of multiple Messiah wrestlers that found the going difficult against Delaware Valley.
Doylestown, PA — It was a tough night for the 23rd-ranked Messiah College wrestling team Wednesday night, as the squad dropped a 39-9 decision at fourth-rated Delaware Valley College.
With the host Aggies boasting a total six grapplers individually ranked in the nation’s top 10, Messiah (8-9) could only score via two matches, as freshman Mike Bressler (157) and sophomore Trent Zempel (165) accounted for all of the Falcons’ scoring.
Zempel (22-4), ranked 10th in the country at the 165 weight, used a patient attack to earn a 6-0 decision over Delaware Valley’s Greg Miele, while Bressler received some help in his six-point win. Facing the Aggies’ Ryan Herwig in the 157 card, Bressler (20-9) accepted a win by disqualification after Herwig was whistled for four consecutive stalls.
Delaware Valley then began its run of “who’s who” in NCAA Division III wrestling, as freshman Bryce Stever lost to the 10th-ranked wrestler in the 125 weight, sophomore Alex DeHart to the second-ranked grappler at 141, junior Craig Gin to the sixth-ranked athlete at 149 and sophomore Dando Speers to the ninth-rated competitor in the 197 weight class.
Things got no easier in the 184 and heavyweight decisions, as sophomores Matt McHugh and Eli Arbazia each fell to the second-ranked wrestler in those cards, falling by technical fall and fall, respectively.
Perhaps Messiah’s best chance at additional scoring came via senior Josh Cragg (18-9) in the 133 weight class, as Cragg was locked in a hard dual with Delaware Valley’s Brandon Clemmer in a bout that opened the evening’s official activities. Clemmer was able to get the best of Cragg 1:43 in, however, earning the pin.
Messiah will not have long to contemplate tonight’s results — or its ultra-tough schedule — as on Saturday the team will travel to NCAA Division I Liberty University for a pair of dual matches against Division I opponents. The Falcons will open the quad against the host Flames and will face Davidson University in the day’s second round action. Weigh-in time is scheduled for 9 a.m., with wrestling slated to begin at 10 a.m.
