Zempel Named ECWC Wrestler Of The Week; Kanouff Rookie

Ithaca, NY — Junior Trent Zempel (Conrad, Mont.) and freshman Ty Kanouff (Linden, Pa.) of Messiah College have been honored by the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) as Wrestler of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Zempel won the 165-pound title at Messiah Petrofes Invitational, pinning three opponents and posting a 7-0 win in the finals. He ran his record to 13-2 on the year.

Kanouff placed second at 133 pounds at Messiah's Petrofes Invitational, beating the nation's eighth-ranked wrestler in the quarterfinals and winning two other bouts before losing 8-5 in the final.

The awards are the first for the Messiah wrestling program in the young season.

The Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference is made up of Brockport State University, SUNY at Cortland, Ithaca College, Lycoming College, Messiah College, Oneonta State University, Oswego State University and Rochester Institute of Technology.
