Falcons Claim Three At York College Duals, Even Up Record
Junior Trent Zempel went 2-0 on the afternoon at York.

York, PA — It did not take long for the Messiah wrestling team to drastically improve its overall win-loss record, as the Falcons claimed three team wins at Saturday’s York College dual meet.

Messiah — ranked 29th in the latest Brute-Adidas/NWCA Top 30 Poll — handed 28th-ranked York College a 21-16 loss to start the day, only to follow with a 32-21 win over Thaddeus Stevens Institute of Technology and a 43-3 drubbing of Gettysburg College in the nightcap.

The wins push the Falcons to 3-3 on the year, helping to trump an injury-laden effort at the Messiah Duals back on Nov. 22.

“I’m super excited to go 3-0 today, and this is a good place to finish off the semester,” said Bryan Brunk, Messiah head coach. “We wrestled great and looked great today. It was very disciplined wrestling. I’m pleased.”

Freshman Danny Lethbridge got things started in the meet-opener against the host Spartans, defeating talented York senior Sean Hightman by an 8-6 score in the 125 weight. It would be the first of three wins for Lethbridge on the day, as the first-year grappler took a forfeit win against Thaddeus Stevens before pinning Gettysburg’s Connor Taylor in 1:33.

“Danny had a great afternoon, but the highlight win was against (Hightman),” Brunk said. “That was a big upset, and got us started off in the right direction.”

Sophomore Mike Bressler pinned the Spartans’ Albert Gleichauf in the 149 class and senior Craig Gin followed with a 4-0 win over Eric Rush at 157, setting up a 7-1 win for junior Trent Zempel at the 165-pound meeting. Those three grapplers each finished 2-0 on the day, with both of Bressler’s wins coming via fall.

Junior Matt McHugh also finished undefeated in two outings (184 pounds), pinning Thaddeus Stevens’ Randy Riffle in 5:56.

“We went 8-3 on the day in what I would consider ‘close’ matches,” Brunk said. “We just kept coming. We pulled out the close ones when we needed to and got pins when we needed them.”

The Falcons will sit idle through final examinations and the holiday break before returning to action Saturday, Jan. 3 at the North/South Duals at Ursinus College. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m.
