Bressler Nabs Lone Place As Falcons Finish 20th At Wheaton
Sophomore Mike Bressler finished eighth at the Pete Wilson Invitational at Wheaton College this weekend.

Wheaton, IL — The Messiah wrestling team placed 20th among 31 schools at the highly competitive “Pete Willson” Invitational hosted by Wheaton College in Illinois this weekend. Sophomore Mike Bressler was the only Falcon to place in the event as he finished eighth in the 149-pound weight class.

“It was a frustrating weekend as we had several opportunities to advance in the tournament but could not hold on to leads in several bouts,” said Bryan Brunk, Messiah head coach.

Bressler was seeded seventh entering the weekend and started in strong fashion by registering falls over his first two opponents. He then dropped an 18-6 decision to the number two seed in the quarterfinal round. Bressler then pinned his next opponent before losing to his final two bouts to complete his eighth place finish.

Senior Craig Gin wrestled well but came up short, as the sixth-seeded wrestler opened the tournament with a fall at the 6:25 mark. He then faced the number three seed in the semi-final round and dropped a narrow 4-2 decision. Unfortunately in his first “wrestle-back” bout he fell by a score of 4-3 to finish out of the placing.

Junior Alex DeHart bounced the number five seed by the score of 3-2 in his first match at the 141 card, but lost the next two to complete his weekend.

The Falcons continue their season this weekend as they travel to Johns Hopkins University on Friday night for a dual match. They then return home for a Saturday Quad Meet that includes Gettysburg College, King’s College, and McDaniel College. Wrestling will begin at noon in Hitchcock Arena Saturday. Messiah’s Friday match at Johns Hopkins is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
