Collegeville, PA — The Falcons came away from the North-South Duals on Saturday with a 2-2 split. The team defeated both The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and Coast Guard by lopsided scores, with close losses to Delaware Valley and Wilkes.
Messiah opened the day with #21-ranked TCNJ, with it obvious to those in attendance that the Falcons were ready to perform. Messiah took eight of 10 matches for the runaway score of 31-10. Freshman Kaleb Loht (133) provided the highlight of the match, defeating nationally-ranked Dan Herr when Herr was forced to withdraw from the match with Loht leading 2-0.
Next up for the Falcons were Delaware Valley and Wilkes, with Messiah finding themselves on the short end of hotly-contested and aggressive matches. Loht contined his stellar wrestlign with a hard-earned 5-1 decision over Eric McCann from Delware Valley and a 7-3 win over Myzar Mendoza of Wilkes. The win against Mendoza avenged an 11-2 loss from earlier this season for Loht.
Senior standout Ty Kanouff (149) impressed in his two matches with Delaware Valley and Wilkes, losing tight matches to All-Americans from each squad. Against Zach Andrews from Delaware Valley, both Kanouff and Andrews were on their back at one point in the match in an eventual 8-10 loss for Kanouff. Ty responded against Anthony Dattolo from Wilkes, coming very close on three separate takedown attempts before falling to Dattolo in the final seconds of the match.
"Ty showed us that he can wrestle with the top guys in the nation," said Messiah head coach Bryan Brunk. "We're not usually excited about going 2-2 on a day, but with the way our guys performed individually and collectively, we believe we're right where we want to be as a program right now. We know we can perform at the highest of levels."
The final dual of the day proved to be the most lopsided, with the Falcons shutting out an undermanned Coast Guard squad.
In addition to the wrestlers noted above, senior Matt Cross (174) and Travis Ebersole (197) stood out with two wins in as many matches for the Falcons.
Box scores for each dual are below:
Messiah 33 TCNJ 10
Delaware Valley 18 Messiah 15
Wilkes 19 Messiah 18
Messiah 49 Coast Guard 0
