Becoming A Basic School

The Basic School Network Stages of Commitment is a document that can help you.

In the prologue of The Basic School: A Community for Learning, Ernest Boyer wrote, "The Basic School is not so much an institution as it is an idea." The recommendations that frame this idea are based on premises which resonate with educators and parents alike as both credible and sensible. The recommendations also challenge educators to be rigorous and focused in creating schools that foster in our children a lifelong love of learning.

The Stages of Commitment provide a process that assists individuals and schools who are interested in exploring the Basic School framework. These stages have emerged from the combined experience and collective learning of schools who have been deeply involved with the Basic School Network during the past five years. They are offered as a guide on the journey toward effective engagement and deepening understanding of Basic School Network philosophy and practice.
