| Falcons finish 5th at NIRSA Nationals The Messiah Men's Volleyball Team traveled to Louisville, Kentucky on April 11-14 for NIRSA Club Nationals. The Falcons were a part of the Division II tournament where they were seeded 5th out of 48 teams from all over the country. During the first day, Messiah emerged in first place from pool-play where they tallied 3 wins and no losses. The teams defeated by Messiah included Texas Christian University, Georgetown, and The University of Wisconsin-Stout. The next day, Messiah faced Eastern Illinois and St. Mary's. Messiah came out firing against Eastern Illinois and won the first game easily, but due to a drop in intensity, many unforced errors, and a feisty Eastern Illinois squad, the Falcons lost the match 1-2. Feeding off of their frustration from the first match, Messiah came out and defeated St. Mary's 2-0. The guys got the #2 seed from their pool and headed into the Gold Division on Saturday with a lot of anticipation and excitement. The first match of the day was against SUNY-Cortland, who defeated Army and Bethel University, who was the runner up from last year. The Falcons knew they had a tough opponent first round of playoffs. Messiah played to perfection and cruised to a 2-0 victory. Next up, the Falcons faced 2nd ranked Ohio Northern in the quarterfinals. Messiah played with a lot of heart and intensity, but the experience of Ohio Northern proved to be too much for Messiah. They lost the match 2-0, ending their tournament with a 5th place finish. Ohio Northern University went on to win the Division II National Title. The Falcons finished strong with an impressive showing as well as naming two of their own, junior Michael Frederick and sophomore Luke Reichel, to the "Honorable Mention All National Team". Additionally, Coach Gerald Porr received the prestigious "Coach of the Year Award" for Division II. Thanks to all of those who supported to Messiah Men's Volleyball Team this year! |
