Biological Sciences
Messiah College students have pursued graduate school in biomedical and biological sciences at the encouragement of faculty over the past four decades. Some have become biomedical researchers at major universities across the United States while others have gone on to teaching/research careers at colleges and universities while still others work in government and pharmaceutical labs. Finally, a growing number have become involved in biological research and teaching on an international level. Our placement record for students applying to graduate schools is excellent and includes programs such as East Carolina University (Physiology), Syracuse University (Physical Therapy), Loma Linda University (MD-Ph.D. program), Ohio State University (Neuroscience), University of Virginia (Accelerated Nursing Program), Temple University (Physiology), University of Wisconsin (Botany), Chatham College (Physician Assistant), Case Western Reserve University (Bioethics), University of Florida (International Agriculture), Penn State University (Biochemistry), University of Southern Maine (Microbiology). In recent years many graduates have gone to medical, dental, optometry and veterinary school. Additional details available on Pre-Health Professions Home Page.
Biology graduates have a wide range of career options available in the expanding field of biotechnology and other areas of biological and biomedical research. Students have access to the Messiah College Career Center for leads on career opportunities. In addition to this, alumni working in the area and faculty who maintain collaborations with nearby graduate schools provide helpful contacts for employment.
Examples of positions acquired by recent graduates include: Research Associate positions with Penn State College of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, New Jersey School of Medicine and Dentistry (UMDNJ) and Thomas Jefferson University. Others have found employment in the laboratories of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies (Celera, Merck).
Many graduates have answered the high calling to teach Biology in public and private high schools. Messiah graduates can be found in Biology classrooms across the East Coast (East Pennsboro, PA; Naples, FL; Richmond, VA for example). Many of these students have gone on to complete graduate degrees and several to positions of administrative leadership in education.
Biology provides a strong foundation for other fields of study. Several students have gone on to study law (University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers University, Regent University) and theology (Asbury Seminary). Several have earned Masters Degrees in Business Administration (Penn State, Regent University), Public Administration (Portland State University) and Public Health (George Washington University).
