Philosophy and Purpose

It is our firm belief that the Earth and all that it contains represents the majesty of the Lord's creation and that humanity was placed here to serve as Earth's steward.  We also believe that the "natural laws" represent God's consistent and continued sustaining and directing power.  It is our conviction that these laws can be discovered and understood.  This knowledge will allow humanity to understand the Creator better and, at the same time, will provide us with the knowledge and tools to carry out our stewardship responsibilities.  The study of science is thus fully consistent with and indeed encouraged by Scripture -- "The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament showeth His handiwork."  At Messiah, as students and faculty join together to study the wonders of the Creation, the high calling for their endeavor is recognized -- to honor and to serve our Lord.

Our goal is to provide an outstanding major in Environmental Science within the framework of a liberal arts education.  The development of a questioning mind is joined with rigorous reasoning.  The interplay between experiment and theory is balanced with growth in human imagination and understanding.  Justice, righteousness and shalom displace power and wealth as the goals of graduates committed to making our world a better place.

This web page is designed to provide present and prospective students in the environmental field with information about our program.  Students are also encouraged to consult the Messiah College catalog and their faculty advisor for additional information and answers to specific questions regarding courses, programs, and requirements.
