J.E. McDermond Hostetter Chair of Religious Studies Professor of Christian Ministry and Spirituality Director of the Sider Institute for Anabaptist, Pietist and Wesleyan StudiesI have taught at Messiah College for twenty years, but I have also taught in England and Kenya. I honestly believe I was created to teach, and I am grateful that I pursue this vocation at Messiah. Every year I teach Christian Spirituality, Christian Theology II: Nature and Mission of Church, and Practicum. Currently I am working on a commentary on 1-3 John. I would describe myself as a keen reader. Professionally, my focus this year is on biographies of Christians, such as Mr. Rogers, Mother Teresa, and William Wilberforce. And every one of N.T. Wright’s book have stimulated my thinking. I highly recommend his works to you. For pleasure reading I gravitate toward British writers, such as Ian McEwan and Joanna Trollope, and Ian Rankin’s crime fiction is first rate, in my opinion. I am an ordained minister in the Brethren in Christ Church, and I would describe my core theological orientation as “Pietist” with a strong overlay of “Anabaptism”.
