J.E. McDermond Hostetter Chair of Religious Studies Professor of Christian Ministry and Spirituality
I have worked at Messiah College since August, 1987 when I was hired to teach New Testament courses. My commentary on 1-3 John was published by Herald Press in May, 2011. Since 1994, however, my primary area of instruction has been the field of Christian Ministries. Every academic year I teach Christian Spirituality, Christian Theology II: Nature and Mission of the Church, Field Experience and Practicum, among other courses. In addition to teaching at Messiah College, I taught in England and Kenya. I quite enjoy international travel, and have visited four of the seven continents; however, I have no interest in visiting Antarctica. Most recently I was in Thailand and Cambodia. I describe myself as a keen reader. Professionally, my recent focus is on popular Christian literature, the recent publications of N.T. Wright and Stuart Murray. For pleasure reading I gravitate toward British crime fiction by authors such as P.D. James, Ian Rankin, and William Brodrick. I, also, follow the English Premier League. My favorite teams are Newcastle United and any team playing either Man U. or Chelsea. My core theological orientation is “Pietist” with a strong overlay of “Anabaptism.” However, I am also very much taken by “orthodox” Quaker (The Religious Society of Friends) spirituality.
