Students in Free Enterprise
Led by a team of nine students and a faculty advisor, Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) offers Messiah students the opportunity to apply what they are learning in the classroom to solve real world problems. Through the process of teaching and serving others, they catch a glimpse of the true scope of their personal potential and are forever changed. As they go about the process of organizing their team, developing education projects and competing in a global competition, they develop teamwork, leadership, and communication skills far beyond those of the average college student.
SIFE is a global, not-for-profit education organization that encourages college students to improve the quality of life and standard of living around the world by teaching the principles and values of free market economics. Members of SIFE teach important concepts through educational outreach projects involving market economics, entrepreneurship, personal finance, and business ethics to better themselves, our community and the world. Each year SIFE competitions are held regionally throughout the United States, drawing together students from over 800 U.S. colleges (1600 worldwide) to share and showcase their outreach projects. Students present oral, audio-visual and written summaries to judges comprised of top business leaders who determine which teams did the best job teaching and equipping others with the tools, principles and values necessary for success.
Each year since 2003 Messiah College has been selected as a champion at the Philadelphia regional competition allowing them to compete at the national level. Messiah has finished in the top forty every year. The competition also provides the opportunity to see how other college students are changing the world and the chance to meet CEOs and other top executives from major U.S. companies. The true rewards for the team come from helping budding entrepreneurs get their plans off the ground and mentoring others to reach for their dreams.
