Communication Major - Speech Communication Concentration
Known as rhetoric by the Greeks and Romans, the speech discipline teaches students how to
communicate in a public setting. Our program seeks to provide students with an understanding of the communication processes both among individuals and within varying cultures and societies. Students develop the ability to analyze and master the various forms of communication: oral, written, visual, and virtual. They study the role of communication in history and society and prepare themselves for careers in the modern information age. Students take courses in a variety of areas including Performance and Practice, Relational Communication, and Mass Media.
The speech concentration provides a firm grasp of communication strategies and theories. With a focus in speech communication students gain a variety of invaluable skills for many occupations. Additionally, students in this concentration graduate with the base they need to further their education through graduate studies.
