Academic Programs
The English department offers four majors and two minors to meet the various needs and interests of our students.
English (Literature & Writing Concentrations)
: Students who major in English pursue an intensive course of study in literature and writing. All students receive a broad background in literatures written in English and do advanced work in writing. Students may choose emphases in either literature or writing. Recent students in this program have published in national journals, presented work at scholarly conferences, and gone on to careers in publishing and academics.
English with Secondary Education certification: The major in English education prepares students for careers in secondary education as teachers of English. Besides the strong curriculum in literature, students gain theoretical background and practical experience in education. Graduates with an English education major earn the Pennsylvania Department of Education certification to teach English at the secondary level. Humanities with Literature concentration: The humanities major is an interdisciplinary degree that enables students to design a program to fit their interests. Humanities students in English choose from a wide variety of courses in history, philosophy, or the arts, while focusing on courses in literature.
