The mission of the Department of Health and Human Performance is to educate students as developing professionals, challenge students to communicate effectively and think critically, and mentor students as Christian servant-leaders.
Objectives
The following objectives and goals are suggested as student goals that are meant to be achieved by all students upon graduation with a degree in any of the professional options offered within the Health and Human Performance Department (Adventure Education, Athletic Training, Health & Exercise Science, Health & Physical Education, and Sport Management):
1. The student will research, critique, and effectively communicate an understanding of various philosophies, principles, and practices associated with their specific area of study.
2. The student will begin to integrate faith and learning through a commitment to Christ and the application of Biblical truths.
3. The student will develop abilities common to the liberally educated, including locating and managing information, solving problems, and making decisions.
4. The student will develop and apply knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for appropriate stewardship of the body and a lifetime commitment to overall wellness.

Sport Management Major
The sport management major offers career-minded students the opportunity to gain a broad based understanding of the major areas of sport management. Graduates in sport management move on to challenging and exciting careers in academic settings, professional sports, sports and recreational facilities, as well as health, fitness, and sport clubs. The sport management major is designed to prepare students to blend general management skills with the specific demands of managing sports organizations. Students acquire a strong foundation in management, finance, accounting, marketing, communications, ethics, and legal aspects of business. Specific courses in sport management provide students with an understanding of the role of sport in society, the role of management in sport, and the opportunities to apply their knowledge in sport-related organizations. Students supplement classroom teaching with a variety of practical experiences through field trips and by working in sport management settings through completion of practica and internships. Students in sport management gain both the knowledge and practical experiences which are necessary for their future success in a variety of sport management careers.
Student Goals:
- The student will understand the technical, interpersonal, and conceptual skills which are necessary to be an effective manager in a variety of sports-related environments.
- The student will recognize the importance of strategic planning in budgeting, marketing, and promotions in both the sports industry business as well as in institutional and public sports organizations.
- The student will appreciate the contribution of sport in various cultural settings as well as its affects on the behavior of the participant, the spectator, and society.
- The student will appreciate how morality and ethics affect personal and organizational responsibility.
- The student will understand the relationship of sport to various governing bodies and their influence on operations and decision-making.
- The student will be able to apply regulations relative to risk management, discrimination, labor issues, and business agreements.
- The student will be able to perform entry-level sport management jobs in a variety of organizational settings.
- The student will be prepared for graduate level work in sport management.
