Espanol Información General "¡Aquí se habla español!" "Spanish is spoken here!" Además de ser uno de los cinco idiomas más hablados del mundo, el español es el segundo idioma de los Estados Unidos debido a la creciente población de habla hispana en Norteamérica. La especialización en español prepara al estudiante para funcionar en un mundo cada vez más interdependiente. Además de cursos introductorios que se enfocan en los asuntos pragmáticos de la lengua, el programa de español de Messiah le ofrece una gran variedad de asignaturas que tratan la historia, la literatura, y la civilización de las culturas hispánicas. Certificación Los estudiantes interesados en capacitarse para ser maestros de la lengua española pueden obtener la certificación para los niveles K–12. Este programa de estudios incluye, además de los cursos de español, una variedad de cursos de educación, observaciones en las escuelas públicas y un semestre de práctica escolar. Algunos de los estudiantes que se especializan en español toman también cursos en la enseñanza del inglés como segundo idioma. Un título en español le prepara al estudiante para seguir una variedad de profesiones en el sector de la educación, el gobierno, la banca, el comercio doméstico e internacional, en misiones humanitarias y cristianas, e incluso, desempeñarse como traductor o intérprete. Los estudios en español también pueden ser útiles para entrar en otros campos tales como las profesiones médicas, los servicios sociales o el periodismo. En adición, nuestro programa permite al estudiante prepararse para continuar con los estudios graduados. General Information "Aquí se habla español!" "Spanish is spoken here!" Spanish is among the top five languages spoken in the world, with the population of native speakers here in the United States growing rapidly. As a Spanish major, your knowledge of "our global village" will expand as you prepare to engage the people of the Spanish-speaking regions of the world. Messiah's Spanish program encompasses a wide variety of courses in the language proper, as well as in the history, literature, culture, and civilization of the Spanish-speaking populations. Certification You may wish to pursue teaching certification, grades K–12. In addition to general education and Spanish requirements, you will take a variety of education courses, including two field experiences and the student teaching semester. Careers and the Major The world has grown closer and smaller and that makes learning languages imperative. Mastery of Spanish as a second language better equips you with the tools necessary to further understanding between diverse populations in the United States and beyond. Opportunities are available in the political arena, economics, military, medicine, science, education, marketing, accounting, banking, international and domestic business, and human services. Because of the growing number of Spanish-speaking households in the United States, many different types of businesses are trying to reach this bilingual population. For example, newspapers, magazines, TV, and radio stations have targeted residents of certain communities by using the Spanish language. Curriculum Introductory-level Spanish courses focus on grammar, phonetics, conversation, and composition. Beyond that, you will divide your studies between Latin American and Peninsular Spanish. All Spanish majors are required to complete at least one semester of study at the University of Barcelona, Spain, or at the University of San Francisco de Quito, in Ecuador, as part of the Brethren Colleges Abroad (BCA) Program. By means of cultural immersion, our students are able to observe patterns of social interaction among the people of Spain and Latin America. By forming personal relationships with these people, our students not only cultivate their Spanish language skills, but also encounter and engage the value systems and beliefs of their host country.
