Enrichment Programs
For more than thirty years, Messiah College has worked
with Temple University at our Philadelphia Campus to offer enhanced studies.
Participants are able to take advantage of the resources and faculty of
a large urban university while living and working in a supportive and close-knit
Christian residential community made up of Messiah students, faculty, and
administrators. Our campus is located across the street from the main Temple
campus.
Study in Philadelphia offers unique cultural and educational
opportunities. Art education majors complete their programs with the junior
and senior year in Philadelphia. Art history majors take advanced work for
two to four semesters with the specialists in Temple's art history department
and may take advantage of Temple's program in Rome.
Studio art majors are not required to study elsewhere,
but many of our majors pursue enrichment at the Philadelphia Campus, another
college in the Christian Consortium, programs sponsored by Brethren Colleges
Abroad, or other approved programs in the United States and world-wide.
Especially popular with our majors are the Gordon College Semester in Orvieto,
Italy, where students work with eminent artists and art historians, and
the program of the Brethren Colleges Abroad in Athens, Greece, where they
may study ancient art and culture at its source.
Our students are actively engaged in experiential learning. Opportunities
range from working one-on-one with faculty to internships with businesses
and institutions. Scholar Interns have interaction with faculty as they
work together on projects such as art historical research, professional
journals, artists@ books, sculpture, and public installations. Students
may earn and learn through work study positions that include gallery assistants,
studio proctors in sculpture, ceramics and computer graphics labs, and slide
library assistants. Our new Design Studio Services gives students course
credit as they design work for a variety of non-profit organizations. Projects
have ranged from the widely-used Genesis logo for the Messiah College solar
car, the department viewbook, to work for the Brethren Ministries in Harrisburg.
Various departmental internships also offer students discipline-related
work/learning experiences in graphics firms, galleries, museums, and with
local craftsmen.

Art Club Art Club is
a valuable asset for those in the Messiah community who would like exposure
to art but are not necessarily art majors. We are not merely an extension
of the art major, but rather wish to involve anyone who has a desire to
make or see art and learn about artists. The Art Club's mission is to serve
God and others with our whole selves, especially with our creativity, talents,
and abilities in art. We do this through discussion, fellowship and activities
including student exhibitions, museum and gallery trips, live-model drawing
sessions, and art sales in which students can sell their work.
Field Trips Individual classes
have the opportunity to utilize the excellent gallery and museum resources
of the four major metropolitan areas surrounding harrisburg: Washington, D.C.,
Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City. The Art Department sponsors a trip
to New York City each fall where students can visit the Metropolitan Museum
of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum
of Design, and various galleries
