GENE R. VANDYKE
Associate Professor of Art Education
VanDyke has been involved in the arts and arts in education throughout his career. His experiences include roles in the arts, arts in education, and leadership at a variety of levels and institutions. These include the Pennsylvania Department of Education as Chief, Division of Arts and Sciences; State Director of the Pennsylvania Governor's Schools of Excellence; school district administrator, and; Dean of Scholastic Affairs for a large private residential school, among others. He is also the national facilitator for the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development's (ASCD) Arts in Education Network. VanDyke is the initiating founder of the Susquehanna Art Museum.
Gene earned his doctorate at Temple University, his masters at the Miami University of Ohio and his BS at Penn State.
The focus of VanDyke's research has been on "how we come to know" and this has manifested itself in numerous exemplary demonstration models including an arts and science integration model and a model linking school districts and historical and museum sites through technology.
VanDyke is author of various educational articles, a producer of three videos on educational reform, and an exhibiting artist. His paintings, fibers and jewelry have been exhibited in numerous galleries and juried exhibitions. He and his wife Elizabeth have created and painted two murals in their church, Mt. Calvary Episcopal Church in Camp Hill.
He and Elizabeth have two sons, Marc a photographer and Jonathan a sculptor in New York City. Gene and Elizabeth enjoy visiting museums, churches and cathedrals during their travels in the United States and Europe.
